Foundation: Faithfulness of God

God is Faithful

The Faithfulness of God is one of the most important characteristics that the Lord displays in his nature and in his relationship to us.  I like to think of it as the rock-steadiness I need when everything is shaky.

Fully understanding his faithfulness will not be possible this side of eternity, but taking to heart a little of what it means for us is essential to our walk with Jesus.

blble verses faithfulness of god

…your faithfulness to the skies. Psalm 36

God’s faithfulness and love are often tied together in the Bible.  In Exodus 34:6, the Almighty spoke to Moses about himself:

“The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God,slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulnessmaintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin.

The Psamlist tells of God´s love and faithfulness, giving us a picture of these enduring qualities our Lord displays.  Psalm 36:5:

Your love, Lord, reaches to the heavens,

your faithfulness to the skies.

And again in Psalm 85 the partnership of love and faithfulness, painted in these beautiful words:

Love and faithfulness meet together;
righteousness and peace kiss each other.

And nowhere else is this combination displayed more wonderfully than in the parable of the Prodigal Son.  Here Jesus describes a father who loves his son, who loves him even though he breaks his father´s heart, and who believes in him even when he walks away into sin.

Faithulness and Love working together

The father is faithful.  His displays the faithfulness of God, in that the father never gives up on his son, but waits for his return, always watching the road for a sign of the young man´s coming back home. Luke 15:20:

But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him

In this same way we can be sure of God´s faithfulness and love working together for us God the Father believes in us and never gives up on us, even though we sometime break his heart with our sin and self-centeredness.

What does it mean for me?

It means you don´t need to worry about your place in him.  You may have moved away, but he is steady as a rock.  You can return to him, because he is waiting with open arms.

He believes in you.  He loves you, he has done everything for you.  You can completely depend on his love and faithfulness working together for your good, for your salvation, for your life now and forever.

Very lovely bit of writing, and a good reminder for those of us who may be struggling.
